Greetings Parents: There are several differences between the Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs, which is especially obvious when your son first crossed over to Boy Scouts. One important difference is the change in responsibility for advancement. When our sons were Cub Scouts, parents had a very active role in helping our sons move through rank and awards. Once our son crossed over into the Boy Scout program, responsibility for advancement falls on his shoulders. This can be a hard transition, but it is an important one. Our goal, in Boy Scouts, is to guide the Scouts in becoming effective leaders. Learning to be leaders is the "purpose" in our fun. (One of Scouting's mottos is "Fun with a purpose.") Adult Boy Scout leaders (both Scoutmasters and Committee Members) try to encourage each Scout to work on his advancement. We want parents to support and encourage their sons' advancement. While these steps are vital, it is very important that the Scouts take the responsibility for his own advancement. The adult role is to encourage this. Being responsible for personal advancement is part of being a leader. Let me share one example of how this works. At the end of every Scoutmaster's Conference, the last thing I discuss with each Scout is the "next step." I ask, "What are you responsible to do next?" If they do not know, I tell them, "Be sure to call Mrs. Ringle and schedule a Board of Review." Mrs. Ringle does a very good job of reminding the Scouts to bring their Scout books and schedule a Board of Review. It is the job of the Scout to take this next step. This is just one difference between the two programs. Of course, there are other differences. I wrote all this to say: "Opps! At our Court of Honor last night, I forgot to extend an invitation to all parents to attend the next Boy Scout Roundtable where the topic will be the differences between the two programs." Let me take this opportunity to invite you to join us. Here are the details for the meeting: Date: January 10 I hope you will plan to attend this special Roundtable meeting. Chuck

This note is to let everyone know that the planned high adventure ski trip to Holiday Valley for January 2008 has been cancelled due to lack of interest. With the Philmont trip this year many people have already made a big financial commitment. Perhaps we can plan other snow sport adventures next year. Jon Saxe

Merit Badge Trail Drive The Opening ceremony is 8:30, and the first class starts at 8:45. It would be a good idea to arrive at around 8:15. The final class is over at 12:15 ----- I will NOT be carpooling but will head directly to the Greene County Career Center. We normally need 4-5 volunteers. I will also need 2 coolers for pop. I will bring the ice with the other supplies. Thanks for your help. Craig Seim

Scout Sunday at Hawker Church! The anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America is February 8th. The anniversary of the Girls Scouts is March 12. Rather than have two Scout Sundays, tradition at Hawker UCC dictates that we have one Sunday to honor our both our boy and girl scouts and alternate the date between a Sunday in February and one in March. This year, Scout Sunday will be observed on Sunday, February 3, 2008 (it’s the Boy Scouts’ year). All scouts, boy scouts, cub scouts, and girl scouts are invited to participate. That means everybody. If you are a member of BSA Troop 42, Cub Scout Pack 74, Girls Scout Troops 2168 and 1949 who meet at Hawker, whether you are a member of the church or not. AND all members of the church who are scouts, but not are not in those units. Please contact Jeff Leonard at PEJeffrey@aol.com, Home 426-2871, work 656-3590 if you plan to attend and if you would like to participate in the service. We have lots of positions to fill, a flag ceremony, scripture reader, leading the congregation in the pledges to the flags, etc. In addition, all of the scout units will be responsible for the reception. We will divide duties for refreshments. In addition, I would like the various units to provide a display of some of the activities that they have done over the last year. Be creative; posters, static displays, projects, revolving slide show, etc. Thanks for your help, your support and your involvement in Scouting.
